In episode 1, Luke Kerr tells the story about the inspiration for the First Five Chapters.
Have you ever browsed your favorite section of a bookstore and stopped short because a book title caught your eye, made you grin and you immediately needed to know more about it? That’s what happened for me when I discovered Wicked as You Wish on the bookshelf of Bright Side Bookshop in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Written by The Bone Witch trilogy author Rin Chupeco, Wicked as You Wish is book 1 in the “A Hundred Names of Magic” series.
Set on an alternate earth that blends familiar fairytale motifs and mythologies with real-world law enforcement agencies, like I.C.E., for the Royal States of America, Chupeco quickly builds a world that sucks you in.
Prince Alexi of the lost kingdom of Avalon is pretty much a fugitive, being moved from one “safe house” to the next for his own safety. It is one such move that introduces him to Tala, her family and the community of Filipino warriors, living in Arizona. For Tala, the arrival of Alexi and the legendary Firebird, sets off a series of events that sends her on adventure she could have never imagined.
The story seamlessly blends pop culture references, Filipino traditions and heritage, magic and mystery into a story “about found family, modern-day magic, and finding the place you belong.”
Wicked as You Wish was released in February of 2020, as the COVID pandemic was spreading across the globe.
